Braces Colors: How to Pick the Best Braces Color for Your Teeth
Modern braces are available in a vast array of colors that allow patients to personalize their treatments. With that said, there are some key considerations you should make before choosing a color for your braces. Here are some tips for selecting a color that will compliment your braces and your smile.
Consider your skin tone
It's generally a good idea to select braces colors that will complement your unique skin tone. If you have fair skin, you will want to choose cool colors such as lilac, light pink, sky blue or even silver. If you have an olive skin tone, consider bright jewel tones such as gold, violet, turquoise or navy. While not necessary, choosing colors based on your skin tone will help ensure that your braces always look flattering regardless of the color of your clothing you wear on any given day.
Think about tooth color
When selecting a color for your braces, you should also consider the contrast between the elastics and your teeth. If you are worried that your teeth look a bit yellowish or stained, you will want to avoid orange or yellow bands which will worsen the appearance. In many instances, it's also best to avoid white, since this can make the natural color of your teeth look dull in contrast. Brown, green and black are also typically poor choices because they tend to look like bits of food stuck within teeth.
Mark special occasions
While it may seem like an especially important decision, remember that the color of your braces doesn't have to be permanent. In most cases, you will be able to change the color of your braces every four to six weeks. This gives you the opportunity to select colors in accordance with holidays or to show off your team spirit. During Christmas, you can go with red and green; during Halloween, you can go with orange and black; during the summer, you can go with red, white and blue to celebrate the 4th of July. You can even get glow-in-the-dark bands that appear clear in the day but flash neon green at night.
Ask your orthodontist
If you aren't sure which color to choose for your braces, consider talking to your orthodontist. With years of experience working with all different sorts of people and smiles, he or she will probably have a good idea of which colors will flatter your face and teeth. Keep in mind that you will only have to wear the colors you choose for a few weeks. If you aren’t satisfied with your choice, you can easily have them swapped out at your next appointment.
Keeping Your Teeth Clean
Whatever color of braces you choose, it's important to keep them clean to prevent colors from fading and reduce the risk of tooth decay. Your orthodontist will give you recommendations for keeping your teeth and braces clean, healthy and intact. This means avoiding sticky foods, brushing twice daily, flossing and maintaining regular dental checkups.
